Occupational standards can be used for all
members of the healthcare team.
They are designed to focus on the competencies required of
the team within a given area of practice (e.g, diabetes services)
rather than on a specific professional or occupational group.
For the purpose of clarification, competencies are defined
here as the consistent integration of skills, knowledge, attitudes,
values and abilities that underpin safe and effective performance
in a professional/occupational role.
Why are competencies and occupational standards useful?
Information on occupational standards and competencies can
be used to:
- Assist managers in analysing how the needs of the service
can be met through the workforce
- Judge a practitioner's level of competence against a nationally
recognised framework
- Clarify the level of competence expected of a practitioner
within a specific area of practice
- Make the links between competencies and the dimensions
of the Knowledge
and Skills Framework and the personal development
review process
- Inform the recruitment, induction, support, development
and performance management of staff.
